Laura Simms’ accolades and accomplishments are simply too lengthy to list in their entirety, but the heart of the award-winning storyteller, recording artist, author, dharma teacher, and international humanitarian’s storied career can be summed up in three words: compassion in action.

Dedicated to the healing properties of stories, Laura’s cutting-edge performance style bridges ancient oral tradition with poetic narrative and performance art. Among other initiatives, she founded A Center for Engaged Storytelling and the Gaindeh Project, an international enterprise that involves storytelling, creativity, meditation and reconciliation for individuals and communities. She currently guides New York Central Park’s iconic program, The Hans Christian Andersen Storytelling Center.

A senior teacher of Shambhala Training and Dharma Art, Laura believes in the medicine of storytelling, engaging mythic stories in service to individual transformation. Committed to spirituality, healing, education, women’s issues, human rights, and working with children, she leads ongoing storytelling workshops and has taught at New York University and Naropa University. Laura is an author of multiple recordings and books, including the book, Our Secret Territory: The Essence of Storytelling, and has been a writer and contributing editor for Parabola Magazine since 1996.
